Small Ways to Save Money: Money Saving Ideas

Hi… Small ways to save money, that's what
we're talking about today so don't go anywhere. Hi my name is Jacqueline Kraszewski and I'm a
real estate agent with Green Team New York Realty. Say what? You thought I was
gonna say Green Team Home Selling System, same brokerage we just changed our name,
but you can always find me at JK Hudson Valley Homes.com. Today we're talking
about small ways to save money.
Happy New Year! It's the new year and everyone
has their resolutions and hopefully your goal setting and planning all the
things you want to accomplish this year. There's probably several items
on almost everyone's to-do list (goal listt) one might be to save money for a down
payment on a home or to pay off your mortgage quicker; or maybe you want to save for a
dream vacation or you want to get out of debt and pay off those credit cards/student loans or maybe you're saving for college. We're going to talk about
small ways that have a big impact. Now bear with me most of these you might have heard or
before but there's one key component that most people forget. So you've heard
it a million times before make your coffee or tea at home and Brown Bag it.
Let's say on average you spend $15 a day between coffee and
lunch and let me tell you, if you live in New York you're spending a lot more
money than that but let's say $15 a day.
That's 75 a week that's $300 a month… that's $3600 a year you could be saving but
here's the key where most people fail they forget to take that money and
actually put it in a separate account. So set up an automatic withdrawal from your
checking account of $75 a week to go into a savings you're not allowed to
touch or buy one of those piggy banks that you have to break, you know you can't
get in it unless you break it and put the cash in there. Another small way to
save , stop buying bottled water. Now maybe you're saying I don't like my
tap water. You can buy a Brita filter they're very inexpensive or some other
type of filter fill a stainless steel water bottle. That's $5 at least a week
if you're buying a case if you're buying more than one case it's $10 a week and
you're helping to save the planet if you stopped by a bottled water, it's a
win-win.
Skip eating out now maybe you're thinking I got a live Jack I can't skip eating out but this is not permanent this is
temporary until you get to your goal whatever that X number is. So maybe
you eat pizza out every Friday night you order pizza and
then you bring it home I know for us here in New York that's 16
to 20 dollars to feed four of us so that's $80 a month you can save if
you're doing it every Friday night. And maybe you're like well I want to live a
little so maybe only every other Friday night
ordered pizza and save the $40 a month. Again just remember to pay yourself.
You
could cut your cable, use YouTube TV Hulu Netflix Amazon with all
these other options there's great ways to save money. You can get rid of your home
phone too if you have a cell phone and that's reliable. Unfortunately my husband
works from home most days or a few days a week
he needs the landline so that bill we have o keep. Here's another idea for yourself
for the month of February, that's coming up we're in January
everybody's getting ready with their fresh start.
For the month of February
pay yourself a dollar each day and add a dollar so what does that mean? On
February 1st you pay yourself a dollar on February 2nd you pay yourself $2 on
February 3rd you pay yourself 3… you get the point so on and so on to the end of
the month by February 28th do you know how much money you have you'll have? $406…… that's a car payment! Oh that might be something you
want to save for maybe you have a car payment you want to pay that off early.
Another
great way is most food stores offer shop online and you're thinking well how does
that help me? Because you're not walking through the store just picking anything
up and throwing it in your cart. (So guilty of this). Now I've only done it once or twice but I'm
committed to doing it now because I was talking to a friend of mine who said her
friend says she figured out she saves 30 to 40 dollars a month (nope that's a week) and an hour and a
half of time each week not food shopping.
She just logs on and has her
favorites saved, she adds what she needs to add, brings her coupons in if she has
them pays at pick up and leaves. How easy is that? It's a trip to the store, pick up
and go home and actually ours even offers delivery for an additional charge.
Another way you can save money or make money is go
through your closet and sell some of your clothes, shoes, things you have extra
of ….maybe you have toys, you have furniture…
I have a friend who makes a killing on
Facebook marketplace selling her stuff she doesn't want anymore. She had a
bunch of old rugs she wasn't using she had a chair anything like that you can
sell. You can also shop at local consignment shops too and save money. I know of
a local designer in town who buys the majority of her clothes at a consignment
shop. She said half of the clothes have new tags on them they haven't even been worn
yet.
Especially if you have a one-time event that you're going to, hit
a consignment store you never know you might luck out and find a really good
steel. Change jar, we have a change jar and this is a great visual especially if
you have kids. If you're saving for a vacation get the kids involved. If you
have a change jar, my husband doesn't know this but I swipe the change off his dresser
and throw it in the change jar. Don't tell him. That's how we save money
for maybe a vacation ,maybe it's a few days away whatever it is we're
saving for. You can do that, you can also show them that hey mom's not
buying coffee every day so look how much money we saved in the savings account and
you know we're going go to wherever your dream vacation is whether it's Disney or
whether it's you know we're going to Utah, whatever the case may be you can
show them Tthen when they go mom can't we go out to eat tonight or come
on dad let's go here you can go hey that's gonna cost this instead of us
going why don't we save that money and then we can book our trip.
So the more
people you get involved the more success you'll have. Maybe you're saving
money to pay off credit cards and you're not really sure the best way to do that.
I learned from a Dave Ramsey class Financial Peace University the snowball
effect. It's very simple easy and I'm like duh why didn't I think of that. Let's
say you have three credit cards you have one for 500 bucks 1 for 1,500 one for 2500 (balance that is)
on and let's say with all that money you've been saving from the lattes to
pay off your credit cards you have an extra $250 a month you can put towards
your credit bills. You pay off the smallest first not
the highest interest rate not the biggest why because you need a victory! Just
like when you go on a diet and you step on the scale you want to see it go down
right you want to see your efforts paying off. If you're going to pay $250
towards a $500 credit card you're done in two months.
You're paying minimum
payments on the other two at that time. Let's say the minimum payment on the
2nd credit card is $1,500 I mean is $100 so it's a $1,500 credit card
you've been paying $100 minimum payment on it. You're going to take the $250 from the card
you just paid off add the $100 and now you're paying $350 a month on that
card until that's paid off. Then you take that $350 add it to the minimum payment
of the other card and you keep going.
Umm but note to self you're not allowed to
use your credit cards during this time because then you kind of don't pay them
off but I think you kind of know that. Thanks for watching I hope you found
these tips helpful, please leave me a comment below and let me know some creative ways
that you've been able to save money for a goal or or something that you've been
looking forward to.
Thanks again for watching and I hope you have a happy and
healthy 2019. I heard a great quote the other day actually it was this morning I
was listening to a podcast and the person on the podcast said "Do you want
to live your life by default or do you want to live life by design" a little food
for thought, again have an amazing day!.
