DEBT episode 4: The post-bubble economy

Image
We have seen that our money is debt and that by misusing it, mainly for financial and housing markets, the reasons are why we are now in a period of crisis. What should we do now? Many different solutions are proposed. Because we don't agree on the cause of the problem. Many discussions are about the symptoms and not the causes of the crisis. For example, the bonuses of bankers or consumer confidence. We don't solve anything by making bankers promise to behave. Or because of households that are deeply in debt that they have to spend more. These discussions distract us from the real problems. This is especially true when we talk about the government deficit. We seem to have decided for some reason that the real problem is that the government is spending too much. By spending less they have to reduce their debt. Then everything will be fine again. But this is not the case. It is about debt: the ratio of debt to income, not the debt level. Due...

Interest free days on credit cards explained in under 2 minutes

Image
G'day, I'm Angus Kidman from Finder and I'm here to tell you how you can save a fortune when you're shopping by taking advantage of interest-free days on your credit card. When you're comparing credit cards you'll notice that they often quote that they've got "up to" a certain number of interest-free days. That might be 30 it might be 44 or it might be 55. Knowing how those days work is really important to make sure you don't pay more interest than you have to. Your interest free period begins on the day your statement is issued and it finishes on the due date when you have to make your next payment. So that number of days you see that's counted up to a certain figure is the maximum number of days that you could go interest-free. If you make a purchase halfway through the month you're not gonna get that maximum number. It could be a lot less and if you don't pay the balance off then you will end up paying interest. So...

Things to Know About Debt Collection Agencies

Debt collection is an essential part of the business process. If you have a problem with a debt that is owed to you, you can contact debt collection agencies for help. There are several things you should be aware of before you call them. Debt collectors will work with a company that is called a debt collection agency. In addition to collecting your debt, they will take a percentage of the money you owe. This is in addition to what the creditor is required to pay you. Before you choose a collection agency, there are a few things to consider. The first thing to do is find out if the agency is an attorney or not. A company should be a lawyer. Law firms that work as a collection agency usually specialize in legal work. Consider the size of the agency and their experience. Does the agency work with large companies? A smaller agency is better since it can handle a smaller amount of debt. Debt collectors can be scary. You must never be rude to a collection agent. Don’t threaten them....

Don Believe the Hype on Skin Care Products

When it comes to cosmetics, the common mantra is: “Benefits, Benefits!” We hear it in everyday conversation and read it on labels, but it’s not a myth. It’s a marketing ploy to lure us into believing that we need more of what they’re selling because they’ve identified the most beneficial ingredients in their cosmetics products. It doesn’t matter that they’re missing out on many essential nutrients like antioxidants, minerals, or vitamins. Some companies say they can’t find them in those natural sources. The first question I always ask people when I share that they’re taking a multi-vitamin is: “What are the health benefits that you’re expecting from your multi-vitamin?” Of course, I’ve already known about the vast majority of those. And sometimes, I’ll learn that someone’s taking in the product because they’re on the pill or are anticipating pain relief after having surgery. So if the cosmetic benefits are all that important, wouldn’t it be a shame if we just let the advertised...
